Sappho: A Translating
Translated by Grace Calk

Our first title is on its way!
We are in the production phase of our first title, Sappho: A Translating, by poet, translator, and Sun Thief co-founder Grace Calk.
Sappho: A Translating is a new and experimental translation of Sappho, an Ancient Greek poet. This unique collection meditates on the translator’s active relationship to the text and employs a pioneering new method Calk dubs “multiple translation.”
Multiple translation is the practice of translating and re-translating a single fragment many times, and presenting the many possible interpretations to the reader, all on the same page. It is a hermeneutical tool that deepens our understanding of the source material, delves into translation as a craft, and invites the reader to collaborate with the poet and translator. The translations themselves are interwoven with lyrical accounts of Calk’s experience as a translator of Sappho, reflecting the deeply personal connection forged between author and translator, even when separated by millennia.
Sun Thief Press is thrilled to be working on this project for its first print cycle and we look forward to bringing fresh attention to the enduring work of the Tenth Muse. Stay tuned for updates over the summer as we begin to roll out!
N.B: Sun Thief Press is in partnership with Translator’s House in Norwich, U.K., which is releasing Ms. Calk’s project this year in the United Kingdom.
